About this hooligan

This is the section where I tell you about myself.

My name is Marney, and I am a writer.

Professional, even. My words have been read in many different capacities — in a newspaper, on websites, in product descriptions, in professional blog posts, in angry e-mails telling people what I really think of them (note — that last one might affect your job status).

Let’s just say, I’m a sassy gal with an entrepreneurial spirit!

Plus, I am totally a fashionista.

Not really.

In fact, most times I look like this:

Beer and the lake. Who could ask for anything more?

Well anyway, when it comes to writing, I think I am not too shabby at it. Years ago, after attending the wedding of a friend, a cousin of the bride asked if she could hitch a ride home. We agreed, and during the ride she talked about her photography. She considered herself an artist, even though she made her living elsewhere. “Everyone has an art,” she told us.

She was right. Mine is writing. Maybe not everyone is great at it, and maybe I’m not as snazzy at it as I think, but it’s still my art.

Writing is now and has always been my passion. It’s just the thing I do. Writing is who I’ve been for more than 25 years, starting with poems and short stories and continuing to creative writing, shorter stories, the occasional first few pages of a longer novella or even a play, then eventually into journalism.

I worked for five years as a television news producer, never in a huge market (though I did spend a glorious 18 months in New Orleans – my 20’s were AWESOME). I stopped working in news when my boss at the time told me I couldn’t work there anymore, which was kind of mean of him seeing as I was pregnant at the time AND it was 4 days before Christmas. Long story short, I stopped writing news, became a stay-at-home mom. I eventually returned to news via a small town newspaper, then I moved into marketing and copy writing. Writing is all that I really know, I have pretty much zero other marketable skills. That are legal. In most states.

I am married to Jim, and we have two boys, Hank and George. We are not a perfect family, but we certainly are a happy one. I also have two awesome parents, three beautiful sisters, a seriously gray-haired yet still pretty young brother, and lots and lots of nieces and nephews.

I’m a little sarcastic and I call things as I see them, even though sometimes I see them wrong. I hope you enjoy my take on motherhood, being a wife, politics, religion, diet & exercise, and whatever else comes up, and feel free to tell me what you think. It’s my blog… I’ll just delete it if you’re wrong.

You can contact me too if you want! There’s even a form. Totes professional.

Happy reading!
