About this hooligan

This is the section where I tell you about myself.

My name is Marney, and I am a writer, not just of this blog, but an actual, paid newspaper writer. No really. This is what I do for a living. So why start a blog when I am already a writer? Would a purchasing manager go home and start purchasing more stuff in his or her free time? Does a movie star go home and walk around the house acting things out? Does a gym teacher go home and make his or her kids do suicides in the driveway? Perhaps, I guess. But for me, writing is who I’ve been for more than 25 years, starting with poems and short stories and continuing to creative writing, shorter stories, the occasional first few pages of a longer novella or even a play, then eventually into journalism.

I worked for five years as a television news producer, never in a huge market (though I did spend a glorious 18 months in New Orleans – my 20’s were AWESOME). I stopped working in news when my boss at the time told me I couldn’t work there anymore, which was kind of mean of him seeing as I was pregnant at the time AND it was 4 days before Christmas. Long story short, I stopped writing news, became a stay-at-home mom, then returned to news via the small town, once-weekly local paper. I enjoy it quite a bit.

I am married to Jim, and we have two boys, Hank and George. We are not a perfect family, but we certianly are a happy one. I also have two awesome parents, three beautiful sisters, a seriously gray-haired yet still pretty young brother, and lots and lots of nieces and nephews.

I’m a little sarcastic and I call things as I see them, even though sometimes I see them wrong. I hope you enjoy my take on motherhood, being a wife, politics, religion, diet & exercise, and whatever else comes up, and feel free to tell me what you think. It’s my blog… I’ll just delete it if you’re wrong.

  • LOVE the very last phrase. I think we share a brain sometimes.

  • You were born to do this. I meant to write fabulous and amusing things on my blog… but really I just post pictures of my kid.

  • I LOVE this blog. I’ve been tuning in everyday and can’t wait to read what you write. We have a wickedly smart and funny family and I believe you, my dear, are at the top of the pack (I’d say you were the funniest but I don’t want to get cut off all the Christmas card lists). Turning your e-mail missives into something more substantive was a great idea. Plus, you’ve gotten your Dad to write more on your blog than I think he said the entire weekend I was with him in Wisconsin. :-)

  • Hi Marney, I was pleasantly surprised to see my blog was on your blogroll. I have to say I was apprehensive about coming to your site, but when I saw the two kids I must admit I melted. I will be stopping by more often.

    • Thanks! I absolutley love your blog, you do a very good job actually saying the things I am thinking, and I think you are right on the money! I hope my friends and family will stop in as well!

  • Ok, so I decided to follow your lead. I have no idea what I am doing yet, but I decided to start up a blog of my own. I am still just trying to figure out how to set up all the “Widgets” and stuff, but I am hoping to get to some serious writting very soon.

  • I was trying to attach the link and I hit submit too early. I really suck at this.
